Dr. Laura Schlessinger Celebrates 10 Years In National Radio Syndication

-- She Broke the Mold in Talk Radio --

Los Angeles, July 19, 2004 - Dr. Laura Schlessinger celebrates her 10th anniversary as the #1 female broadcaster in nationally syndicated radio. Coming onto the national scene in July 1994, Dr. Laura stunned the industry with the rapid growth of her program - especially in view of the conventional wisdom that women could not make it in talk radio. She went on to become the first and only woman to win radio's Oscar, the Marconi Award. Today, "The Dr. Laura Schlessinger Program," syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks, is heard daily with a nationwide listening audience of eight million, and she is consistently one of the top three rated national radio talk show hosts in the country.

Having enjoyed the highest ratings in Los Angeles on KFI-AM for many years, Dr. Laura's national expansion provided more opportunities to influence, help, touch, and entertain people everyday, not just on radio, but also through her seven best-selling books, public speaking, television appearances and her Foundation for abused and neglected children.

When asked about her success, Dr. Laura said, "I consider it a blessing and privilege to be able to broadcast each day and touch so many lives so deeply and personally. Each call is a unique opportunity to help someone ‘do the right thing,' while other listeners are moved and motivated by what they hear in a call."

Mobilizing people to make a difference in their communities and their own homes, Dr. Laura has come to be known as a watchdog for families and children. She's famous for coining the phrase, "I am my kid's mom," that evolved into a movement. Dr. Laura is often credited for empowering millions of people to put family first, and to do so with pride, despite today's worship of success and money.

Not surprisingly, this movement has also been perceived as controversial by those who saw it as a challenge to women's liberation. Her perspective on family values and the sanctity of parental responsibility also went against the prevailing current of politically correct pressure to rationalize all kinds of selfish behavior.

However, in the past few years, increasing numbers of women have begun to question the wisdom and value of missing out on the joys of hands-on motherhood and have left prestigious jobs to become "my kid's mom." Dr. Laura's views on marriage and family seem now to be more common sense than controversial.

Dr. Laura not only heads a radio empire, she is also the author of seven best-selling books and president of the Dr. Laura Schlessinger Foundation, which helps hundreds of thousands of abused and neglected children nationwide. Dr. Laura stated, "One of the best things about success is being able to use one's celebrity and good fortune to help others." When she's not working, Dr. Laura competitively races sailboats, hikes, pumps iron, knits, and spends time with family and friends.
